The Belvedere School for Hands-On Preservation
June 12, 13, 14, 15, & 16, 2017
Historic Plaster Repair Boot Camp is a fun and intense, five-day, hands-on, learn by doing, total immersion experience in historic plaster repair. Students will learn state-of-the-art techniques in re-attaching loose plaster back to the wood lath and how to patch historic plaster properly. You will be part of a team of students restoring original plaster in a circa 1840’s slave house located in the Central Park National Historic District in Hannibal, Missouri.
Rory Brennan will be leading this workshop. Rory is considered one of the top historic plaster experts in America. Rory has concentrated on the repair and conservation of historic plasters and the preservation of skills and techniques needed to work in historic materials, in the most exacting of client environments. His work includes the re-creation and restoration of historic plasters, renders, washes, and the replication of original ornamentation. His goal is to repair, restore, and preserve the integrity of existing historic buildings in the most cost effective manner while empowering owners
and contractors with the skill set necessary to achieve the longest lasting results possible.
Rory has worked on some of the most iconic structures in the country including: The complete re-plastering of the Servant's Hall at George Washington’s Mount Vernon; The Widener Library, Harvard University; The Cabinet Building, Brown University; The Mormon Tabernacle; Colonial Williamsburg; Pennsylvania State House; Massachusetts State House; Chesterwood, Stockbridge, MA (Daniel Chester French’s Home. The artist who created the Lincoln statue for the Lincoln Memorial in DC). This is a partial list of his lifetime of work.
This is a tuition-based class with a limit of 16 students. You will be working side-by-side all five days with instructor Rory Brennan. This will be an intense, learn-by-doing opportunity. You will learn: state of the art techniques in how to properly re-attach plaster that has come loose from a wall or ceiling (lost its plaster keys to the wood lath); how historic plaster was done & why; how to patch cracks and missing areas; how to mix historic plaster and much more. At the end of
the five days you will know from beginning to end, how to completely repair historic plaster and receive pertinent handouts as well as a "Certificate of Completion" from the Belvedere School.
This class is designed for folks who want to learn historic plaster repair to a level they can go home and begin doing it. Small & large contractors, property owners, historic house museum maintenance staff, and historic preservation students will all
benefit from this hands-on, traditional training event. All skill levels are encouraged to sign up.
Tuition for this five-day workshop is $795 and includes fresh ground coffee & snacks in the morning as well as a home cooked lunch each day. Space is limited to 16 students and pre-registration is required.
