Flat Wall Plaster Repair Workshop

December 12-13, 2017
Flat Wall Plaster Repair Workshop
Craftwork Training Center will help you shape history one wall at a time.

Whether you're a craftsman, contractor, architect, owner, or someone who simply loves old houses, join us for a 2-day workshop to repair vintage plaster walls.

Plaster was traditionally used as a protective and decorative coating for walls and ceilings and to mould and cast decorative elements. Original plaster work is a desirable asset to any period home, but may require maintenance and repairs to retain its elegance. Over the years, repairs and surface treatments may obscure and compromise the original beauty of historic plaster work. Unfortunately, with the advent of modern building technologies, many of the traditional plastering methods and skills are disappearing. To retain and maintain the historic integrity of interior spaces, a new plaster finish may need to be applied to all of the originally plastered wall and ceiling surfaces. In areas where no patching is required, the new finish may be applied as a skim coat over existing surfaces. For areas involving patching, a brown coat may need to be applied to mesh spanning the joint or to wire lath that is attached directly to the original structure before applying a new finish coat. Hands-on demonstrations and practice exercises include techniques for mixing plaster, carrying out repairs to the substrate, filling cracks and patching holes, curing, and using our 3-coat lime plaster system. To ensure an exceptional learning experience, the class size is limited.

After completing the workshop participants will:
  • Know how to care for and use the tools of the trade.
  • Understand the properties of lime plasters.
  • Be able to fill cracks, patch holes, and repair delaminated areas.
  • Realize how to prepare the surface, level uneven walls, and cover imperfections.
  • Be proficient applying our 3-coat plastering process (bonding coat, brown coat and finish coat).
Craftwork Training Center teaches time-honored skills and fine craftsmanship using intensive hands-on training in preservation masonry and carpentry techniques. Our workshops enable students to repair, restore, and stabilize historic structures and their components. We also emphasize construction principles, current and emerging industry standards, preservation practices, and sustainable materials.
