Sons of Jacob Synagogue Open House
June 25, 2017 |
Join us at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue for a free open house inside one of Providence's greatest gems. For many years, there was a thriving Jewish community in the old North End along Orms Street, Douglas and Chalkstone Avenues. Though most of the 300 families that once made up the congregation of Sons of Jacob have since moved to the East Side and surrounding suburbs, a small group continues to worship in the warmth of the richly textured ground floor.
We will have a rare opportunity to explore the synagogue, including its sparkling second floor sanctuary. Though the upstairs worship space hasn’t been used in a decade, when the lights are turned on it transforms into a jewel box unlike anything else in the city. Hand-painted murals depicting animals, trompe-l’oeil scenery, and the Jewish zodiac glow in the bright light of dozens of lightbulbs and a crystal chandelier.
All are invited to meet neighbors, enjoy live Klezmer music, while learning about the synagogue’s history, its neighborhood, and exciting plans for the future.
Drop by anytime between 12-3pm on Sunday June 25th. Bring your own stories of the synagogue and surrounding neighborhood.
