Amazing Women and How They Got the Vote

September 26, 2017
Amazing Women and How They Got the Vote
Tuesday, September 26th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet and the Islip Public Library will co-host the American Association of University Women (AAUW), a national organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

The AAUW Islip Area Branch L.I. Suffragists Committee is celebrating the centennial of women's suffrage in New York State with its presentation of "Amazing Women and How They Got the Vote". The presentation tells the stories of the courageous militant L. I suffragists, including Islip's Louisine Havemeyer, and their political activism as well as the activities of the anti-suffragists.

The Historical Society of Islip Hamlet is commissioning a new historical marker in honor of our resident suffragist, Louisine Havemeyer, which will be unveiled at the meeting.  High tea will be served.  Anyone attending wearing hats or clothing from that period will be eligible for a door prize. The meeting will be held at the Islip Public Lib., 71 Monell Ave., 7-9 pm, and is free and open to the public; registration, starting Sept. 6th, is required (631-581-5933), seating is limited.  For more info, 631-245-0675, www.isliphamlethistory.org.
