Contested Legacies of Historical Monuments

October 4, 2017

FOREST, VA: Mr. Jefferson’s Salon Series returns to Poplar Forest on Wednesday, October 4 at 6:30 p.m. to explore the future of historical monuments and memorials, along with the evolving efforts to tell the full story of Thomas Jefferson and America at large. Join Edward L. Ayres, Tucker-Boatwright Professor of the Humanities and president emeritus of the University of Richmond; Calder Loth, Poplar Forest board member and retired senior architectural historian for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources; and Joseph McGill, founder of the Slave Dwelling Project, inside Thomas Jefferson’s villa for a decorous examination of what it means to memorialize and contextualize our country’s history, and its relevance to society today. The discussion will continue during a closing reception of wine and light hors d’oeuvres.

“Thomas Jefferson wrote that ‘every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle,’ ” said Jeffrey L. Nichols, president and CEO of Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. “Our Salon Series was developed to offer a place for people to discuss their differences of opinion in an open and civil way, and to help to come to an understanding about the issues our nation faces today.” Poplar Forest patterned its Salon Series on the 18th-century enlightenment salons—fostering discussion and debate on topics ranging from politics, to art and literature, to science, philosophy and morality—that Jefferson himself attended while serving as American ambassador to France, and are designed to encourage an exchange of ideas on topics or issues that were of interest or a challenge to Jefferson in his time, and why they continue to matter today.

Reservations are suggested due to limited space inside the house and can be made online or by calling the Museum Shop at 434.534.8120. Admission is $15 for adults (ages 18 and up) and $10 for college students (must show ID).

Mr. Jefferson’s Salon Multiplied Testimony, Multiplied Views: The Contested Legacies of Historical Monuments will take place at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, 1542 Bateman Bridge Road, Forest, Virginia, on Wednesday, October 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For directions, please visit poplarforest.org.
