Sacred Places Architectural Tour
October 7, 2017 |
Join us for our Sacred Places Tour and discover the architectural beauty, history and culture of churches, chapels and synagogue throughout Santa Monica. Easily overlooked in bustling downtown Santa Monica, St. Peter and St. Paul Coptic Orthodox opens onto a world of ancient religious traditions in ritual and architecture. The church is deeply rooted in the teachings of St. Mark the Apostle, who brought Christianity to the Egyptians in 37 A.D.
Over the centuries, the Copts have suffered numerous periods of persecution, most pronounced during the reign of Roman Emperor Diocletian, when 800,000 Coptic Christians were martyred in Egypt. Today, the Coptic Orthodox Church continues to flourish, with approximately 18-22 million members, mostly in Egypt.
Visitors to St. Peter and St. Paul Coptic Orthodox will witness this faith manifested through all the senses-- a chanted service, incense softening the air, brilliant gold and polychrome icons glorifying the Holy Family, saints and martyrs, and the iconostasis, a wooden screen of icons and religious paintings separating the nave from the sanctuary. Purchase your tickets today and explore this spectacular place of worship and many others. Advance tickets are $25 for Santa Monica Conservancy members and $30 for the public, with special discounts for members of the tour site congregations and the Santa Monica History Museum.
