Historical Cemetery Tour

The New Bedford Preservation Society is pleased to present New Bedford Artists and Artisans Rural Cemetery Tour on Saturday, October 7th from 1pm to 4pm. Historic portrayals in period costume will take place at several of the grave sites of New Bedford’s internationally famous artists and artisans including but not limited to; painters William Allen Wall, Robert Swain, Frances Gifford, Albert Cook Church and female painter Minna Grumbt Webb, early African American photographer James Reed as well as glass artisans Gundersen brothers Hjalmar and Robert. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased by cash or check at the Grape Street Rural Cemetery gate on the day of tour. A $2 discount will be given to New Bedford Preservation Society members. The rain date is Sunday October 8th from 1pm to 4pm.
Visitors will be guided to the family plot of Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), who was raised in New Bedford and became the country’s most preeminent painter of the American west. Other highlights include the sites of Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917)who was born in New Bedford was one of the most distinctive painters in the history of American art and Robert Swain Gifford (1840-1905), born on an island in Buzzards Bay, studied with Albert Van Beest and became a landscape painter and etcher. New Bedford’s Rural Cemetery was founded in 1837 and is the fifth oldest rural cemetery in the United States. Cemeteries have been called outdoor museums, windows to the culture of the past. They not only serve as a resting place for the departed, they tell us much about the times in which they lived.

Guided walking will tours led by society volunteers will step off from the center Public Receiving Tomb, accessible from either Grape Street or Dartmouth Street entrances, every 15 minutes beginning at 1pm. The last tour will leave at 2:00pm. The tour route encompasses approximately one mile in a one and a half-hour walk, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tour route is primarily on paved roads so maybe handicap accessible depending on ability.
The proceeds generated from the tour will be used towards the society’s ongoing projects, such as New Bedford Re-Leaf, the Historic Marker Program, reprinting of Architectural Walking Tour brochures, historic house tours, lectures and other educational efforts.
