Memphis Heritage's 2018 Preservation Series is going to the Movies!

March 1-26, 2018

Join Memphis Heritage every Monday evening in March to view a preservation issue captured on the big screen, followed by a discussion led by local experts who bring it home to Memphis.

Drinks + popcorn included!

March 1, 2018 – Citizen Jane: Battle for the City (2016): Arguably no one did more to shape understanding of the modern American city than Jane Jacobs, the visionary activist and author of “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” who fought to preserve urban communities in the face of destructive development projects. Here, she fights against the ruthless redevelopment projects of urban planner Robert Moses. Introduction by MHI Executive Director June West, followed by brief Q + A discussion of preservation’s role in urban planning to kick off the series.

March 12, 2018 – DOUBLE FEATURE: The Fabulous Fox (1998) + The Legend Lives On: Atlanta’s Fox Theatre (2016) – Two case studies on two fabulous Fox Theaters, one demolished and one repurposed. Followed by a discussion of the national theater preservation movement, which had its roots in Memphis, as well as local theaters currently up for restoration: the Lamar Theatre and the Luciann Theater, led by local theater historian Hillsman Wright.

March 19, 2018 – Treasures of New York: The Landmarks Preservation Movement (2015): Explore the history and future of the wide-scale preservation efforts of New York City’s Landmark Commission to protect thousands of culturally and historically significant sites. Screening followed by a discussion of Memphis’ use of these same preservation tools, past and present, including the National Register of Historic Places and Local Landmark Districts, led by local historian Charlie Lambert.

March 26, 2018 – Overton Park: A Century of Change (2001): Historians and community activists talk about the development, trials and rebirth of Memphis’ oldest and largest public park, known nationally for the 1971 U.S. Supreme Court battle and ruling that established a precedent for protecting parkland nationwide. Introduction by filmmaker Willy Bearden, followed by Q+A with Willy and a surprise guest.
