Mid-Century Modern: Precedents & Regional Influences

Join Docomomo WEWA, Historic Seattle, and the Cascadia Art Museum on Saturday, March 3, 2018, to learn about Michigan's mid-century Modern design legacy and the regional Northwest aesthetic covering the period 1948-1966.
The program takes place in Edmonds. We begin at 10:00 AM with two lectures at Edmonds City Hall (121 5th Ave N, Edmonds, WA 98020).
Brian Conway, Michigan's State Historic Preservation Officer, will discuss the influential and progressive design professionals working in Michigan at mid-century, some of whom had ties to the Pacific Northwest. The Michigan Modern Project documents and promotes the outstanding architectural heritage of the state.
David Martin, Curator of the Cascadia Art Museum, will speak about the museum's Northwest Design at Mid-Century exhibition which showcases a variety of works and objects that define the Northwest aesthetic at mid-century. The two lectures will end by NOON.
From 1:00 - 3:00 PM, participants are invited to take a self-guided tour of the Cascadia Art Museum (190 Sunset Ave, #E, Edmonds, WA 98020), located in a former 1960s-era Safeway supermarket that has been transformed into a regional arts museum along the Edmonds waterfront. The museum is located one-half mile from Edmonds City Hall. David Martin will be on site to take questions.
Admission to the Cascadia Art Museum is included in the registration cost. Lunch and travel between the lectures and the tour are on one's own between NOON and 1:00 PM.
