The Next Fifty – Points of Departure:
A day-long symposium following APT's 50th Anniversary Conference will celebrate the advances of preservation technology and the impact APT has had on the world preservation stage. This symposium will develop the intellectual and technological themes and challenges that we envision will be facing preservation professionals for the next half century. Where are we in the world with preservation technology? How has the field changed in 50 years? What new formula will we need for the next 50? What are the new challenges? How can we be more mainstream, less specialized? As the field matures, who are the partners we must collaborate with to remain vital? How will authenticity, resilience and changing technologies guide us? With breakout sessions and facilitated discussion, a facilitator and Technical Committee leaders will work with participants to create a vision for the Next Fifty.
Bradshaw Hovey, and Symposium Co-Chairs - Barbara Campagna, Jill Gotthelf, LaLuce Mitchell will open the Symposium with a discussion on Climate change, Energy transition, Continuing/changing urbanization, Population growth, Migration, Technology and economic displacement, Economic inequality, Water crises, Food crises, Refugee crises, and Reactionary political movements.
Imagining the context for preservation. Break-out sessions, led by APT's Technical Committee Representatives will focus on what these larger trends mean for preservation practice? How do the rationales for preservation change? What other changes on the horizon will reshape preservation? What opportunities or threats do exogenous changes present to preservation? Are there new fields of specialization in preservation practice to emerge?
Milford Wayne Donaldson's keynote "Historic Preservation – A National Perspective for the Next 50 Years" envisions a future with new roles for youth, education, community outreach and diversity in preservation; a greater emphasis on sustainability and resiliency; integrating renewable energy and environmental stewardship into practice; concern with renewing and right-sizing infrastructure; and opportunities for consultation with native tribes about traditional cultural landscapes.
Bradshaw Hovey's plenary discussion "The future of the future is in the present" will bring together the ideas generated in the break-out sessions to develop an overarching framework for action. Fifty years starts right now. What do we do immediately, over the next five years, and beyond to concretely address the challenges and opportunities of change? Erin Tobin, Vice President for Policy and Preservation, the Preservation League of New York, will reflect on the highlights of the day and the future of preservation at the public policy level.
