Now Accepting Nominations for the Secretary of the Interior's 2015 Historic Preservation Awards
SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR’S HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD 2015 NOMINATION

INTRODUCTION

Section 110(h) of the National Historic Preservation Act (54 U.S.C. 306110) directs the Secretary of the Interior to establish an annual award program to recognize the
outstanding contributions in the area of historic preservation. The Secretary’s
award is distinguished from other historic preservation award programs because
it: was established as a Cabinet-level of recognition through a statutory mandate; focuses on the accomplishments of individual employees and not on programs or projects; and recognizes the contributions of employees at multiple levels of government.  The award comes with a special citation and a monetary award of $1,000.

ELIGIBILITY

Current officers and employees of Federal Preservation Offices, State Historic Preservation Offices, Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, and Certified Local Governments are eligible for the award.  Employees of the National Park Service’s Washington Office are not eligible for this award.

CRITERIA

The award recognizes special achievements by employees of Federal, state, tribal, and local preservation programs who have made outstanding contributions to the preservation of historic places. Nominees must be individuals whose contributions surpass the expected scope of their position, and whose creativity and expertise have significantly fostered the overall goals of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Federal Preservation Offices:
Describe the significant achievements for which the employee is being nominated and how their accomplishments have helped the agency fulfill the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Federal Historic Preservation Programs.

State Historic Preservation Offices: Describe the significant achievements for which the employee is being nominated and how their accomplishments have helped the state fulfill the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act and 36 CFR Part 61, Procedures for State, Tribal, and Local Government Historic Preservation Programs.

Tribal Historic Preservation Offices: Describe the significant achievements for which the employee is being nominated and how their accomplishments have helped the tribe fulfill the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act and 36 CFR Part 61, Procedures for State, Tribal, and Local Government Historic Preservation Programs.

Certified Local Governments:
Describe the significant achievements for which the employee is being nominated and how their accomplishments have helped the local government fulfill the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act and 36 CFR Part 61, Procedures for State, Tribal, and Local Government Historic Preservation Programs.

LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY

Section 110(h) of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended:  The Secretary shall establish an annual preservation awards program under which he may make monetary awards in amounts not to exceed $1,000 and provide citations for special achievement to officers and employees of Federal, state, and certified local governments in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the preservation of historic resources.

NOMINATION PACKAGE

Federal, state, tribal, and local governments are encouraged to nominate outstanding employees for this recognition. Four annual awards may be presented, one for each type of government agency (Federal, state, tribal and local). The winners will be selected through a national competition administered by the National Park Service and the Office of the Secretary, Department of the Interior.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

The nomination must include contact information (name, title, address, work phone, email address) for both the nominee and the nominator. Nominations must also include a narrative statement (no more than three pages) that addresses the award
criteria. Electronic nominations are strongly encouraged.  Please send your nomination, either as an attached file or embedded in the body of your email, to David_Banks@nps.gov. Nomination packages may be faxed to 202-371-1794. Nomination packages must be postmarked on or before October 1, 2015, and awards will be announced in early 2016. For additional information, please contact David Banks at 202-354-6968 or at David_Banks@nps.gov.
