Three-year Part-time Position (20 Hours per week). Based in Portland area serving western/southern Maine.
The Field Representative provides direct assistance to communities, non-profit organizations, and owners of historic properties, regionally through correspondence, site visits, public presentations, testimony, workshops, conferences and seminars, and special projects. S/He focuses on helping others save historic places and on strengthening the organized historic preservation movement, with emphasis on providing preservation technical services in the field.
The western/southern Maine field representative will share time equally between Maine Preservation and Greater Portland Landmarks. This position is employed for 10 hours per week by Greater Portland Landmarks to provide services to the greater Portland area and employed for 10 hours per week by Maine Preservation to provide services to other areas in western/southern Maine. S/He will also work closely with the Maine Historic Preservation Commission to provide information about state grants, historic preservation tax credits, and other programs administered by the Commission. A second field rep will serve eastern/northern Maine.
Qualifications: A successful candidate must have a minimum of five years of strong and broad historic preservation experience and knowledge. The candidate must meet the Professional Qualifications Standards for Architectural History or Historic Architecture as set forth in 36 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 61, Appendix A (see addendum at the end of this document). Experience in historic preservation technical services, public policy advocacy and community revitalization desired. Excellent human relations skills and ability to work independently with a wide range of individuals and community groups necessary. Strong written and oral communications skills and experience in public speaking required. Successful candidate must be a self-starter, a highly motivated and energetic person who can quickly and accurately assess and understand the preservation issues, drawing upon other resources as needed, to provide informed and timely recommendations that are tailored to the particular circumstances. Willingness and ability to travel and be away from home overnight is essential. Must provide and maintain own vehicle (mileage is reimbursed).
Salary $20,000 to $30,000 commensurate with training and experience.
Addendum: Professional Qualifications Standards
Architectural History:
The minimum professional qualifications in architectural history are a graduate degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history, or a bachelor's degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation or closely related field plus one of the following: 1. At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; or 2. Substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American architectural history.
Historic Architecture:
The minimum professional qualifications in historic architecture are a professional degree in architecture or a State license to practice architecture, plus one of the following: 1. At least one year of graduate study in architectural preservation, American architectural history, preservation planning, or closely related field; or 2. At least one year of full-time professional experience on historic preservation projects.
Such graduate study or experience shall include detailed investigations of historic structures, preparation of historic structures research reports, and preparation of plans and specifications for preservation projects.
