Lunch with the Librarian

August 6 - September 24, 2014
Lunch with the Librarian
This August and September there is lots to do for families at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum (MHHM). The popular “Lunch with the Librarian” returns to the museum garden every Wednesday, August through September, at 12 noon. Pre-school children and their caregivers are invited to the historic gardens to enjoy stories courtesy of the Morristown and Morris Township Library. Please bring lunch and chairs or a blanket, and enter the garden through the driveway side gate. If the weather is extremely hot or rainy, the program will be moved indoors. No pre-registration is needed, and admission is free.

On the first and third Tuesday of the month the museum invites 3 - 5 year old children and their caregivers to participate in the “Growing in the Garden” programs, which include a story, a walk in the garden, and an art project. Come listen to the summer sounds of grasshoppers and make antennae as part of the Tuesday, August 5th program “Green as a Grasshopper”. Then on Tuesday, August 19th, join us for “Hum like a Hummingbird” to learn about the hummingbird’s hum and create a hummingbird mobile. On Tuesday, September 2nd children will take part in activities to mark the start of National Honey Month.  Why does honey come in different colors?  What happens inside the hive?  Activities include a story, walk in the garden, and an art project using bubble wrap to create a beehive print. Search under stones and fallen leaves in the garden at on Tuesday, September 16th to find the trails of garden snails and slithering slugs.  Children will learn how these land mollusks creep along on their single “foot”.  After a story and an opportunity to observe and handle snails and slugs, children will use clay to make a snail or slug model to take home.  “Growing in the Garden” continues throughout the fall and programs have two session times available, 1:15 - 2 pm or 3:45 - 4:30 pm. Pre-registration is required.

For more details or to pre-register for education programs, please contact Cynthia Winslow, (973) 538-2404 ext. 16, or email cwinslow@maccullochhall.org  This fall, join us on school vacation days October 13th for the “Arch-KID-Techure Workshop” and November 7th for “Civil War at Sea: Boats in Battle”.  Please visit maccullochhall.org or follow us on Facebook to learn more about upcoming family programs at the museum, including  the fall Homeschool series “Roads, Trails, Canals and Rails”, as well as Girl and Boy Scout programs, and the topics for “Growing in the Garden” fall sessions.

MHHM is open for guided tours and visits to exhibits on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday afternoons from 1 pm to 4 pm. The last tour ticket is sold at 3 pm. Visitors can purchase a ticket to visit any of the changing exhibits at the Museum, or can enjoy the galleries before or after their tours. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and $4 for children ages 6 - 12. Members and children under 5 are free. The historic gardens are also open (free of charge) Monday to Friday 9 am - 4 pm and Sundays 1 - 4 pm unless posted otherwise. The Museum gift shop is open during touring hours and offers a selection of Thomas Nast items, as well as a wide range of local history books and other gifts. The galleries and gift shop are open until 4 pm.

MHHM preserves the history of the Macculloch-Miller families, the Morris area community, and the legacy of its founder W. Parsons Todd through its historic site, collections, exhibits, and educational and cultural programs. The Musuem is closed for the Labor Day holiday weekend on Sunday August 31st.  Call (973) 538-2404 ext. 10, visit our website maccullochhall.org or find us on Facebook.
