Fifth Annual Feminist Art History Conference
October 31 - November 2, 2014 |
The Fifth Annual Feminist Art History Conference, sponsored by the Art History Program of American University, offers participants a space in which to engage with the expanding legacy of Norma Broude and Mary D. Garrard, two pioneering feminist art historians and professors emerita of art history at AU. This year’s conference includes sixty-eight papers in seventeen sessions. The papers have a global focus that spans a broad range of topics and time periods; together they illustrate the diverse ways in which feminist research and interpretation continue to inform art historical analysis and scholarship.
Conference participants come from across the country and around the world to share views, debate issues, and network with colleagues and friends. Increasing attendance at these annual conferences demonstrates the continuing centrality of issues raised by feminist art history and the vitality of research by feminist scholars. The annual Feminist Art History Conference at American University has become a recognized successor to the Barnard College Feminist Art History Conference in New York as an important forum for ongoing feminist scholarship.
All events this year will take place on the American University campus. Registration opens on Friday afternoon at 3:00 and the afternoon session starts at 4:00. On Friday evening we will host an opening reception at 6:00 and the keynote address by Dr. Lisa Gail Collins will be held from 7:00 to 8:15. Conference sessions continue all day Saturday with a networking reception at 5:30. On Sunday morning there will be a single plenary session from 10:00 to 12:00, followed by a special tour at 1:00 of an exhibition showing work by four Washington-area women photographers in the American University Art Museum.
This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Lisa Gail Collins, is Professor of Art History at Vassar College. Professor Collins earned her PhD in American Studies from the University of Minnesota and has taught at Vassar since 1998. Her talk, titled “Here Lies Love: Feminism, Mourning, and a Quilt from Gee’s Bend,” is drawn from her current book project on history, memory, creativity, and community. Her recent publications include New Thoughts on the Black Arts Movement (co-edited, 2006), which included her Introduction and essay titled “The Art of Transformation: Parallels in the Black Arts and Feminist Art Movements.” In 2006 she also published Art, Artifacts, and African Americans: Context and Criticism (2006). For the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she co-authored the catalog African-American Artists, 1929-1945: Prints, Drawings, and Paintings (2003). In 2002 she published The Art of History. African American Women Artists Engage the Past.
The Feminist Art History Conference is open to the public. Advance registration (by Friday, October 24) is recommended.
