New Bedford Preservation Society's 40th Annual Meeting

September 11, 2014

The New Bedford Preservation Society will hold its 40th Annual Meeting on AHA! Night, Thursday, September 11, 2014, at 7 p.m. at the New Bedford Free Public Library, Third Floor Meeting Room. The public is cordially invited to attend.  After a brief annual meeting, the society’s plaque and Elm Awards will be presented.

Society President Mark P. Fuller will present an illustrated talk featuring the recipients of this year’s Elm Award, sharing many “before and after” images of the twelve historic properties being honored.  In addition, the society will present its prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award to Ms. Diane A. Berube for her many years of significant involvement in the city’s preservation community.

Established by the society in 1997, the Elm Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have done an outstanding job in either the ongoing maintenance, restoration, preservation or adaptive reuseof historic New Bedford properties.  The Preservation Society has been awarding historic plaques through its Historic Marker Program since 1976. In recent years, the society has developed a more inclusive, multi-tier marker program which now consists of three distinct marker types:  Level 1 and 2 markers denote style, based on values of architectural significance, and a third Level denotes a significant person or event having been associated with the property.
In addition to the Historic Marker Program, other Society projects include New Bedford Re-Leaf, the production of Historic District Walking tour brochures, Summer Afternoon Walking Tours, Mill Trolley Tours, Historical Cemetery Tours, Grave Restoration Project, Historic House Tours, and other programs. The society’s 23rd Annual Holiday House Tour is scheduled for December 13 and 14, 2014 – save the dates!
