Roman Residence Tour

Join Docomomo WEWA for a tour of the Roman residence in Seattle's View Ridge neighborhood. Designed in 1950 by the firm of Chiarelli and Kirk, construction of the house was completed in 1951 for Herschel and Caryl Roman, the original and only owners of the property.
The Roman family carefully maintained the house, keeping most of the original features intact. The well-designed and well-built house is a fine example of mid-century Northwest modern architecture. Presenting a modest front facade and entry, the house sits on a large, wooded lot and opens to reveal a spacious, light-filled interior. The Romans planted over 150 varieties of rhododendrons, and were assisted in the design and planting of the garden by a Japanese American landscaper. The home is a veritable time capsule of restrained, mid-century modern design that has carried over well to the 21st century.

WHERE: Park and meet at the View Ridge Swim and Tennis Club parking lot, 5815 NE 77th Street, Seattle, WA 98115 (cross-street Sand Point Way NE, directions to the house will be provided)
COST: $5 per person
IMPORTANT NOTE: We are not revealing the address of the house for this tour due to lack of adequate on-street parking near the house. All tour attendees (whether driving or taking alternative modes of transportation) must meet at the parking lot of the View Ridge Swim and Tennis Club. We have arranged for free parking in the lot. Please note that neither the Club nor Docomomo WEWA accepts responsibility for theft or damage that may occur to your vehicle while parked in the lot.
You'll be greeted by Docomomo WEWA volunteers who will provide a map, directions, and address for the tour site, which is walking distance (one tenth of a mile, or a long block) from the parking lot. The house and Club parking lot are very close to the Burke Gilman Trail for those who wish to bike or walk. Metro bus routes 30 and 75 will get you close to the Club.
The walk from the parking lot to the house is a short distance but up a steep hill. If you have mobility challenges, please contact us at info@docomomo-wewa.org and we'll provide you with the address so you can be dropped off and picked up or park in a more accessible spot near the house.
For all tour attendees, once you arrive at the house, please check in with volunteers to pay the $5 tour fee. You'll receive a tour brochure at that time.
You'll be asked to either remove your shoes or wear shoe covers (provided). Exterior and interior photography permitted for personal use only. Backpacks and strollers are not permitted inside the home. Small children must be with an adult at all times.
