Family Program - Happy Birthday Thomas Nast!

September 23, 2015
Family Program - Happy Birthday Thomas Nast!
Hooray! On September 23, 2015, it’s artist Thomas Nast’s 175th birthday celebration at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum (MHHM). Come celebrate the famous Morristown political cartoonist’s birthday at MHHM, home of the largest collection of original works by Thomas Nast. Learn more about Nast’s achievements as an illustrator, discover more about his family life and his friendships with notable 19th century people and mark his big day with Nast-inspired fun!

During the program, which runs from 10 am to 12 noon, families can visit the exhibit “Thomas Nast: Unknown Works and American Icons” to see virtually unknown works by the artist who defined many of America’s most popular icons – Santa Claus, Uncle Sam, the Democratic Donkey, and the Republican Elephant. This exhibit has been extended in honor of what would’ve been the artist’s 175th birthday (September 26, 1840). Previously unpublished oil paintings and watercolors, rarely seen pencil sketches, pen and ink drawings, and original architectural elements from the artist’s home are among the objects presented in the exhibition. In addition to these and several never-before-exhibited pieces, some of Thomas Nast’s best-known characters are also on display.

Children will have the opportunity to create their own Nast character mask and decorate a big “birthday card” for Nast. The program will conclude with party games and mid-morning birthday cupcakes!

The family program runs from 10 am to 12 noon. Pre-registration is required, space is limited. Activities are recommended for children ages 5 to 12 years old and their parents. Cost for the program includes craft materials and is $6 per child for Museum members and $8 per child for non-members. There is no charge for the accompanying adult. To pre-register call (973) 538-2404 ext. 16 or email cwinslow@maccullochhall.org with name(s) and age(s) of children and a contact phone number and email address.
