East Tennessee Preservation Conference

October 22-24, 2015
East Tennessee Preservation Conference
Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance are proud to be partnering once again to present the annual East Tennessee Preservation Conference October 22-24. This popular event emphasizes finding effective solutions for securing the future of our historic places while capitalizing on our cultural heritage. Participants include preservation professionals, architects, planners, tourism professionals, government and community leaders, economic developers, real estate professionals and others who have found that advanced knowledge of historic preservation principles and practices can be a valuable asset. It is a great event for both learning and networking.

To celebrate its 7th year, the conference is being held in downtown Knoxville. Primary sessions will be held at the East Tennessee History Center and the conference will include an opening reception and hands-on workshops at Historic Westwood. Once again, the Tennessee Historical Commission will be providing specialized training for Certified Local Government and Historic Zoning Commission members. A variety of walking tours to sites in downtown Knoxville will also be part of the conference experience. An exciting new feature this year will be the introduction of the first East Tennessee Preservation Gala. The Gala will showcase successful preservation efforts throughout the region and will include the annual East Tennessee Preservation Awards.

Donovan Rypkema, principal of PlaceEconomics, will be the keynote speaker. Mr. Rypkema is recognized as an industry leader in the economics of preserving historic structures. Since 1983 he has provided ongoing consulting services to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Main Street Center. In 2012, the National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded him the Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award, the organization’s highest honor, for his work in the preservation field. Mr. Rypkema will speak on Friday, October 23.
