Lunch and Learn: Accessory Dwelling Units
May 4, 2016 |
Come to the Architectural Heritage Center on Wednesday, May 4 from noon to 1 pm for a free “Lunch and Learn” about Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and their growing role within Portland's and other areas current housing development trends. ADUs are secondary housing units on single family lots, and have become quite popular lately in Portland due to a temporary regulatory waiver of System Development Charges. ADUs can help cities achieve higher density without changing, or with only moderate changes to, a building’s traditional footprint and street appearance. Lunch for this session is provided by WILLCO.
This hour-long session will be presented by two ADU experts - a private sector ADU consultant, educator and advocate, and a city planner. Kol Peterson built his own ADU in NE Portland back in 2011 after completing Earth Advantage’s Sustainable Homes Professional course. He blogged about the experience from design to completion, and has since been teaching and consulting other homeowners, real estate professionals, builders and designers about ADUs. Managing editor for AccessoryDwellings.org, Kol owns Caravan – The Tiny House Hotel, organizes the city-wide ADU Tour, and owns an ADU consulting company, Accessory Dwelling Strategies LLC.
Phil Nameny is a City Planner with the City of Portland where he works on various regulatory improvement projects for the code development team. Recent projects include updates to the city’s accessory structures code regulations which included a reassessment of many of the standards affecting accessory dwelling units. Phil has worked on both advanced planning and planning implementation issues for the city
during the last 16 years.
This session is one of a series of three “Lunch and Learns” in May in recognition of National Historic Preservation Month. Other topics are Citizen Activism Training, and Current Preservation Issues in Portland. All sessions are sponsored by the AHC Advocacy Committee. Registration is free, but to guarantee a seat please
register in advance. Bring a friend or colleague!
The AHC is easily reached via streetcar or buses #6 and #15. Bike racks in front. Some on-street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood.
