Swamps, Seminoles, and Snakes: The US Army in the Second Seminole War

September 4, 2016
Swamps, Seminoles, and Snakes: The US Army in the Second Seminole War
When Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, the tribes of the Southeastern United States responded in different ways. For example, the Cherokee opted to fight the Removal Act through the court system. However, the Seminoles in Florida opted for armed resistance and what resulted was one of the longest wars in United States history. Thousands of US Regular Army troops and volunteer regiments would be deployed to Florida between 1835 and 1843.

This program will explore the weapons, equipment, food, and experiences of US soldiers operating in an extremely difficult environment against an elusive and skillful foe in the swamps of Florida.
