Mortise & Tenon Joinery Workshop
September 8, 2017 |
Craftwork Training Center will help you jump-start your joints!
Whether you're a craftsman, contractor, architect, owner, or someone who simply loves using your hands, join us for a 1-day workshop to learn the ins-and-outs of mortise and tenon joinery.
The humble mortise and tenon is perhaps the most common joint in woodworking and is one of the mainstays of the craft. Mortise and tenon joints are the preferred style of joint for furniture and cabinetry. It's strong, durable, and little affected by the expansion or contraction of wooden members as a result of temperature and humidity changes. When shaped properly, mortise and tenon joints can even be decorative elements in the finished appearance of a piece. By adding the mortise and tenon joint to your repertoire of woodworking skills, you'll have a simple and strong joint that can be utilized in a variety of situations. Hands-on demonstrations and practice exercises include identifying the types of mortise and tenon joints, practical applications for the joint, laying out the joint, cutting the mortise and tenon, and fastening the joint. To ensure an exceptional learning experience, class size is limited.
After completing the workshop participants will:
- Recognize the types of mortise and tenon joints including stopped or blind, through, angled, and wedged varieties.
- Understand the steps and sequence of cuts to create accurate mortise and tenon joints.
- Be able to plan and lay out the joint.
- Appreciate the various techniques used to cut a mortise.
- Grasp the importance of the tips for cutting a tenon.
- Know functional and decorative methods for fastening the joint.
