Practical Tool Sharpening Workshop
August 11, 2017 |
Craftwork Training Center will help you sharpen your bevels!
Whether you're a craftsman, contractor, architect, artisan or someone who simply loves woodworking, join us for a half-day workshop to learn how to sharpen your hand tools.
One of the most important skills a woodworker can acquire is the ability to sharpen hand tools easily and well. Woodworking tools, such as planes, gouges, and chisels, become dull after repeated use and, due to nicks, the bevel may require repair. Blades that are improperly sharpened or ignored will not live up to their full potential. Instead of casting dull hand tools aside or making an easy job more difficult than it should be, learn how to give your hand tools a good working edge. With proper care and a little know-how, quality woodworking tools can last a lifetime. Demonstrations and hands-on exercises include observing the original bevel of the tools intended for sharpening; proper bevel angles for specific tools; types of sharpening stones, grits, and mill files; selecting the right stone with the proper grit to sharpen specific tools; and tips and techniques to maintain bevel angles. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own hand tools to sharpen during the half-day workshop. To ensure an exceptional learning experience, the class size is limited.
After completing the workshop participants will:
- Be able to consistently produce razor sharp cutting edges on any tool blade.
- Know techniques of holding a tool during the sharpening process to create and maintain a uniform edge with a minimum of effort.
- Understand the mechanics of a sharp edge.
- Be familiar with abrasives and the sequence in which they are used.
