Grave Marker Cleaning & Repair Workshop

July 28, 2017
Grave Marker Cleaning & Repair Workshop
Craftwork Training Center will help you bring your piece of history back to life.

Whether you're a craftsman, contractor, architect, owner, or someone who is passionate about cemeteries, join us for a half-day workshop to learn how to clean and repair vintage gravestones.

While cemeteries are often considered to be perpetual, their most prominent feature, the grave markers, are not. Maintenance is the key to extending the life of historic grave markers--arresting deterioration and preventing potential safety hazards. Participants will be introduced to our Graveyard Kit which contains a combination of restoration materials and tools to implement preservation measures. The lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises cover the steps to prepare a field-mixed glue to repair small broken elements, using Waterglass to consolidate
friable masonry, patching stone with Lithomex, and using D/2 Biological Solution to clean headstones. To ensure an exceptional learning experience, the class size is limited.

After completing the workshop participants will:
  • Be familiar with our Graveyard Kit--a combination of tools and materials to clean, repair, and maintain grave markers.
  • Recognize where, when, and how to use our natural glue.
  • Be aware of current standards of practice and methods for gravestone conservation.
  • Realize where, when, and how to use D/2 Biological Solution to remove staining caused by mold, algae, mildew, lichens, fungus, and air pollutants.
  • Understand the basics of Lithomex, a stone and detail patching mortar designed for historic masonry applications.
Book Worskhop MAS-02 (July 28, 2017) online at https://www.shoplimeworks.us/store/p496/MAS-02 or call 215-536-1776 to register by phone.

Craftwork Training Center teaches time-honored skills and fine craftsmanship using intensive hands-on training in preservation masonry and carpentry techniques. Our workshops enable students to repair, restore, and stabilize historic structures and their components. We also emphasize construction  principles, current and
emerging industry standards, preservation practices, and sustainable materials.
