Landscapes of Conflict: Battlefield Preservation

1-day workshop | Instructors: Ian Burrow and Wade Catts

This day-long workshop will examine national, state, county, and municipal efforts at recognizing and preserving America's fields of conflict. Using camps, fortifications, and battlefields of the American Revolution as case studies, the day will include a morning presentation from historians, archaeologists, and county planners. Topics will include (1) an overview of the national movement for battlefield preservation, (2) battlefield preservation on the state/county/municipality level, including heritage areas, and specific battlefield studies, such as Trenton, Red Bank, Princeton, Brandywine, and others, (3) use of archaeology in battlefield studies, and (4) the role of community in battlefield preservation, including study, inventory, awareness, stewardship, and heritage tourism. The workshop will also include a tour of Princeton Battlefield.
