African American Family History Day

September 22, 2018

FOREST, VA: Researching African American family history presents a unique set of challenges. Join Poplar Forest and the Poplar Forest African American Advisory Group for African American Family History Day on Saturday, September 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for a primer on effective methods and strategies for tracing the lineage of enslaved ancestors. Admission to African American Family History Day is free; however reservations are required as space is limited to 60 participants.

Learn about research methods, tools and ideas in workshops presented by Dr. Shelley Murphy and Angela Walton-Raji of the Midwest African American Genealogy Institute (MAAGI). The genealogists will present two sessions: “Ask the Right Questions—Gleaning Information from Family Conversations” and “From Oral History to the Records.”

An avid genealogist for over 30 years and a coordinator and instructor for MAAGI, Dr. Shelley Murphy (aka familytreegirl) presents workshops at genealogy conferences across the country. Murphy, who is known for her interesting problem-solving methodology lectures, will present “Ask the Right Questions—Gleaning Information from Family Conversations,” offering tips and strategies for family historians to enhance their research through the art of asking the right questions. The session will look at evidence using the simple principles of the “So What” timelines, and help attendees learn how to analyze the information, combat some genealogy brick walls and map out a research plan.

An author, genealogist, podcaster (africanrootspodcast.com), blogger and coordinator and instructor for MAAGI, Angela Walton-Raji is a founding member of AfriGeneas.com, the oldest online website for African American genealogy. The author of Black Indian Genealogy will present “From Oral History to the Records,” a look at how one can pursue records and oral history, and how to use the proper resources to solve a family mystery. She will explore the essential steps to breaking down brick walls through the story of an African American family based in Tennessee that was separated in 1860 upon the death of the slaveholder, and an interesting story that arose more than a century later from details shared by cousins at a family reunion.

A complimentary lunch will be served at midday. Poplar Forest archaeologists will present artifacts recently excavated around the South Tenant House and talk about the history of the site as a slave quarter and tenant house.

Admission to African American Family History Day is free; however reservations are required as space is limited to 60 participants. For more information or to make a reservation, call the Museum Shop at 434.534.8120 or visit poplarforest.org/familyhistoryday.
