Fifth Annual Slave Dwelling Project Conference

October 24-27, 2018

The fifth annual Slave Dwelling Project Conference will take place at Middle Tennessee State University from October 24-27, 2018. Register by September 15 for the regular conference rate. The conference theme is "Slavery, Resistance, and Community," and a broad range of topics will be discussed.

The conference will feature an excellent program, including keynote speaker Colson Whitehead, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Underground Railroad (2016). Other highlights will include musical performances, artistic displays, an overnight stay at the historic Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center in Murfreesboro, and a field trip to Nashville historic sites. Please join us!

“Now that I have the attention of the public by sleeping in extant slave dwellings, it is time to wake up and deliver the message that the people who lived in these structures were not a footnote in American history.”--Joseph McGill, founder of the Slave Dwelling Project, Civil War re-enactor, and descendant of the enslaved.
