Property History
The Henry Clay Carter House, a brick veneer Tudor-style cottage, was built for Henry Clay Carter III and wife Marjorie in 1930. Carter was born in New York City in 1897, the son of Henry Walton and Lulu Alice Rawls Carter. His father was a physician and by 1910, the family had moved back to Washington, NC where Henry Walton Carter continued his medical practice. Henry Clay Carter III married Marjorie Hoyt, daughter of John K. Hoyt, owner of J. K Hoyt Department Store, the town’s leading clothier. The Carter House features many of its original details, including hardwood floors throughout, six over one windows, original doors, and an arched alcove under the stairs. An entry nook opens into the center hall and stairwell with curved balustrade. French double doors lead to the living room, while a single panel door leads into the kitchen.

Property Description
Located just blocks from the Pamlico River in Historic Washington, NC, the Henry Clay Carter house provides a unique opportunity for adaptive reuse! Historically used as a residence, the house is located in front of the library and surrounded by public parking that make this a unique opportunity for a business location. This Tudor-style brick veneer house has large rooms downstairs that bring in plenty of natural light. Wide openings throughout the downstairs emphasize the charm and character of the house and help to make the space feel larger. The living room fireplace mantel has unique carving in the central panel of the frieze.
