Property History
In the 19th and early 20th Century, over 100 acres of this portion of Cheltenham Township was known as Fountain Farm. All of the lands now bordered by Cedar, Church, Jenkintown and Township Line Roads were once the entire farm. Owned and managed by Thomas Thomson, he was the Son of a well-regarded local Quaker family and lived his entire life on the farm.

Upon his death in 1908, the lands were completely sub-divided and the farm became Township history.

His daughter, Elizabeth Thomson married Herbert Taylor in 1897 and after the sub-division of the family farm, they hired Heacock & Hokanson to design & construct their home on a 1+ acre parcel that is now 8211 Cedar Road.

Mr. Taylor was an Inventor and worked for George D. Ellis & Sons, the premier manufacturer of metal containers for petroleum, military & other industrial uses. The Taylor’s were also exceptional gardeners, as references were found of them winning many awards for their prized peonies and roses!

This classic center hall Colonial has all the hallmarks of quality construction & design, offering over 4,000 SF of spacious living PLUS a 600 SF In-Law apartment in the former carriage house (more on that later).

Cedar Road retains many of the gracious estate properties that were constructed from the wealth of the Industrial Revolution. Drive down the street, and a beautiful combination of Victorian mansions and gracious Colonials are sited on large lots from 1 to 4 acres each.

Property Description
Enter the circular driveway of 8211 Cedar Road, and you are greeted by stately Oak trees and an abundance of azaleas, rhododendrons, dogwoods, hollies and other specimen trees and shrubs.

The central entry has a gable roofed porch with large columns to greet your guests. The central hallway has a large coat closet and the powder room tucked under the main staircase. Direct access to the rear yard is at the end of the hall and provides for great cross breezes during the Spring and Fall months. On the Southwest side of the entry are the Living, Family & Sun rooms. The living room is enhanced with recessed lighting and a set of built-in bookcases that flank the entry to the family room. The stone fireplace (now decorative) could easily be converted with a gas insert if the next Owners desire.

The family room overlooks the rear yard and has direct access to the upper patio through a set of French doors along with another set of built-in cabinets on each side of the rear windows.

The large sunroom faces Southwest and is flooded with light through an abundance of windows. One also has direct access to the upper patio & side yard.

On the other side of the entry hall are the dining room, butler’s pantry and the completely remodeled chef’s kitchen. The dining room has a large bay window and a china closet. The elegant silk wallpaper reflects the evening light beautifully.

The original butler’s pantry provides great storage in its floor to ceiling cupboards. Pass by the rear staircase and you enter into a beautifully crafted custom kitchen that was completely reconfigured and expanded in 2012.

With windows on three sides, everything one needs for preparing great meals is at your fingertips. A large circular bar provides seating for 5 in the center of the kitchen. The Viking appliances that flank the staircase wall provide double ovens and a French door cabinet depth fridge. Full height cabinets provide great storage, while a small cabinet by the center hall is the perfect place for your charging station.

Along the Northeast wall, you will find the 5-burner Viking gas cooktop, a custom vent hood, built-in microwave drawer and the under-mount sink (with garbage disposal) angled into the corner with the dishwasher immediately to the right. Tucked into the far rear corner is the beverage station that includes a built-in wine cooler and more cabinets for storing the stemware and other necessary items. The kitchen also had radiant floor heating placed under the hardwood Oak flooring.

The second floor was completely re-configured in 2003 to provide for an expansive master suite and a large en-suite guest bedroom. The guest bedroom now incorporates what was once the original sleeping porch and is a spacious & light filled bedroom with a completely modern bathroom. The back staircase comes directly up onto the 2nd floor hallway, and there is also a huge storage/linen closet.

The master suite is amazing! Through a set of reclaimed French doors, you enter into the sleeping chamber with recessed lighting, picture moldings and French doors to the deck over the family room downstairs with lovely views of the rear gardens. The artfully reimagined master bathroom has dual vanities (marble & stainless steel), a beautiful slipper tub and a large walk-in shower (with the privy tucked behind a knee wall). Again, radiant floor heating was placed under the marble tiles. At the end of the bathroom, a former bedroom was converted into a huge (12’ x 12’) master walk-in closet with custom organizers on all 4 walls and a center dresser for additional storage.

The third floor has the remaining bedrooms (three of them!) and 2 more full bathrooms.

The house is serviced by a dual-zoned, high-velocity central air conditioning system, and both exterior condensers have been replaced within the past 5 years. The full (un-finished) basement does house the laundry, and has direct access to the rear yard via an exterior stone staircase.

Now, let me take a moment to talk about the in-law apartment that was created in the former carriage house back in 2010. To provide for accessible living space for the Owner’s aging parents, the current Owners requested from Cheltenham Township, the ability to convert & expand their former 2-car garage into a fully functional 1-bedroom apartment.

Conditional approval was given to the Owners (in-law, parental use only) and the garage was expanded at the rear to add a large bedroom. Now, this detached, ground level unit provides for a large living room area (with a powder room), a wall of built-in bookcases and a small breakfast area next to the efficient galley kitchen. There is a staircase to the 2nd floor loft area and a door to the bedroom at the rear of the building. A full bath and a wall of closets completes this great space.

Please note, the ONLY use for this space for future Owners is to provide for housing of the Owner’s parents. No other use is authorized by the Township, and the new Owners must abide by those deed restrictions. So, for anyone that has their parents visit far too often, what a perfect place to put them!!!

Now finally, let’s talk about the rear grounds. There are three distinct entertainment patios. The first of which is directly off of the sunroom and the family room. Then down a few steps, the current Owners installed a walled dining patio with exterior lighting, connected to a circular patio just in front of the detached carriage house. A hard-lined gas grille is just off this third patio.

The original cement pond with a lovely fountain/statue provides those wonderful sounds of constantly trickling water. It’s a peaceful oasis surrounded by more large rhododendrons, azaleas and hollies. A large grassy area is behind all the entertainment patios as well as a garden shed to store all the yard equipment.

Additional Notes
It’s a beautifully updated home that provides everything one could need in a classic, center hall design.
