Property History
A Clark County, OH history stated “In the year 1836 and 1837, George Jones built a large two-story brick building on the National Road, two miles west of Vienna, on the north side of the road where the township road crosses it. In 1848, this property was purchased by Philip Weaber, and by him fitted up as a hotel...Mr. Weaber conducted the hotel business here for eight years and then abandoned it. The building has since been used as a residence and is now owned by the heirs of Levi Baird.” (Beers 655)

In a description of the property by the WPA Writers Program, famous guests of the tavern are mentioned: "P. T. Barnum, Jenny Lind, Horace Greeley, Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, and other prominent persons visited the tavern at one time or another." (The Ohio Guide 501)

Property Description
The Buena Vista Tavern is a two-story, five-bay, ell-shaped brick residence built in 1836-7 with elements of both the Federal and Greek Revival styles facing what was then the brand-new National Road, which is now U.S. Route 40, between 2 exits of I-70. A set of "tourist" camp cabins was built behind the house in the early 20th century; one remains. A frame addition on rear elevation housed a retail shop from 1963 to 2019. The house has been faithfully restored by its owner over the sixty years they have owned the house.

Additional Notes
There were originally eight fireplaces; seven have been restored, and the original cooking fireplace for the Tavern still has the original crane in place. The front doorway has been completely restored, using early photographs.

The square footage includes the retail addition added on in the 1970s. There is an original cabin which has a square footage of 336; two outbuildings with a square footage totaling 1584.
