The house was commissioned by George Henry Smathers and his wife, Daisy Rice Smathers. George H. Smathers was a mayor of Waynesville, an NC state senator, and a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, advocating for the Cherokee before the Supreme Court, in land title disputes. Daisy R. Smathers was the daughter of Samuel F. Rice, one-time Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama. After the Smathers, William Pittman "Pitt" Gautier of Miami made this his summer home. Later, when he retired he lived here fulltime. The most recent owners were Dr. Virgil M. Messer and his wife Patsy Kelley Messer. Dr. Messer was a beloved local physician, and Mrs Messer ran a catering business out of the house. They also lived off the land, with a huge vegetable garden in what is now the pasture. The children had an idyllic life on what was a small farm, and cherished many, many dogs, and cats, as well as horses and goats. |
