Mimosa Farm’s recorded history dates back to the early days of Virginia’s Eastern Shore settlement. The farm, originally called Oakland Farm, was once part of the 950 acre bayside plantation of Colonel Obedience Robins. Colonel Robins was born around 1600 in Northamptonshire, England , and came to Virginia about 1626, and was one of the foremost leaders of the early Eastern Shore community. The property’s historic significance was due to its location near the first Northampton County settlement known as “The Towne”. This historic property has been passed down from generation to generation since the middle 1600’s among the Robins and Roberts family. A detailed history of the property has been prepared by historian David Scott of the Northampton Preservation Society.
Mimosa’s “telescope” style architecture, a distinct style of the Eastern Shore, is a frame house composed of sections, each of descending height giving the appearance of fitting together like a collapsible telescope. Adding to the exterior interest were Italianate decorative influences seen in the heavily bracketed wide eaves, chamfered porch columns, and flat sawn porch balusters.
