Property History

Nestled on 2.29 acres along Old Monticello Road, this stately residence offers a unique opportunity for someone who not only loves beautiful architecture but also wants to become a part of preserving local history.

Built in 1920, the home is believed to have been the original directory and administrative offices for Sacred Heart Catholic Church on North Jefferson Street. According to local lore and historical records, it played a central role in the early Catholic community of Milledgeville. In 1934, while under the care of Father T.J. McNamara, the building was damaged by fire. Rather than being a loss, it was transformed into two apartments. On February 3, 1935, a reception was held to celebrate the opening of a newly built rectory and the reopening of the clergy apartment building, drawing hundreds of guests from near and far. It was described as the most delightful event of the season. Known affectionately as the White House, the structure later housed nuns and served as the parish elementary school from 1951 to 1956. It continued to host Sunday school classes well into the early 1980s.

The home also shares a meaningful connection to Flannery O’Connor, one of Georgia’s most celebrated authors. Her Treanor and Cline ancestors helped establish Sacred Heart Church, donating the land and hosting the city’s first Catholic mass in her great-grandfather’s apartment. O’Connor herself was a daily communicant, and her faith, nurtured at Sacred Heart, greatly influenced her personal life and literary work. When the church expanded in the 1980s, a decision was made not to demolish the structure but to give it a new life.

In April 1983, Mr. Frank and Mrs. Thelma Walker Livingston purchased the home for one dollar with the agreement that it would be moved. The Walker family offered two acres of land on Old Monticello Road, and the house was carefully relocated to its current site. Between 1983 and 1992, the Livingstons lovingly expanded and improved the home, adding a spacious kitchen and dining area, a sunroom filled with light, a garage and workshop, a downstairs master suite, and central HVAC systems.

Every addition was designed to blend seamlessly with the home’s original architecture and character. Throughout the property, their love and attention to detail are clear in the carefully thought-out flower beds, tree placement, and outdoor seating areas that invite peaceful mornings and charming gatherings.

Between 2020 and 2025, the home received a fresh wave of thoughtful updates including new windows, cabinetry, appliances, lighting, flooring, HVAC systems, and more. Every choice made during this transformation honors the past while elevating the comfort and efficiency of modern living.

The home’s historic charm is felt the moment you arrive. With its soaring 12 foot ceilings, elegant Colonial Revival symmetry, and inviting southern front porch, it feels both grand and deeply welcoming. Inside, you will find three fireplaces, original moulding, baseboards, and several original doors that tell stories of another era. Beneath the current flooring, the original hardwood floors remain intact, waiting to be rediscovered. Behind the walls, the original brick structure still quietly stands, grounding the home in its earliest beginnings.

This is not just a house. It is a rare opportunity to become the next chapter in a story that has quietly shaped Milledgeville’s spiritual and cultural roots for over a century. Homes like this do not come along often. It is a place where history is not only remembered but lived in every day. If you feel drawn to legacy, beauty, and purpose, this is your moment. Come walk through it. Come feel it. And perhaps, come home. This cherished piece of Milledgeville history is ready for its next faithful steward. Will it be you?
