From Preservation Action:
President Trump's Justice Department recently announced that the President has authority to abolish already established National Monuments. This reverses a 1938 determination that said National Monuments established by former President's under the Antiquities Act could not be revoked. This announcement comes as the Department of Interior is considering changes to National Monuments as the administration seeks to expand energy production on federal lands.
The Antiquities Act of 1906 has been used by almost every President, Democrats and Republicans, toprotect some of our nation's most treasured natural landscapes, historic sites, and cultural heritage.During President Trump's first term, his administration called for dramatically reducing the size of Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. These actions were challenged in court, but were ultimately restored by President Biden. These same court challenges are currently pending, in anticipation of additional attempts to reduce and eliminate National Monuments.
Preservation Action will continue to advocate for the importance of National Monuments and the protection of the Antiquities Act. Stay tuned for more.
