L.A. City 2025-26 Proposed Budget and Historic Places
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com -
Contributed By: Los Angeles Conservancy
Email The Author: news@laconservancy.org

While not yet adopted, it is looking promising for approximately 1,000 positions that now appear to be spared in a revised 2025-26 budget released by the City of Los Angeles. Thank you to the many public commenters who spoke in public, wrote emails, or submitted comments to the City Council, and the hard work of the Budget and Finance Committee, and City departments who proposed cost savings or revenue adjustment solutions!

The City of Los Angeles's initial 2025-26 budget released by the Mayor's office proposed layoffs of more than 1,600 positions across a wide range of departments.

The Conservancy is particularly concerned about cuts to the Office of Historic Resources (OHR), critical to the preservation of historic places, as well as cuts to the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation, which could have led to the closure of Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House—L.A.'s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. The revised budget calls for the restoration of all positions the Barnsdall Park, and many positions within the City Planning, but it is still unclear how OHR may be affected.

While we remain optimistic, none of these positions can be taken for granted until the final budget is approved. There is still time to submit your public comments urging that critical positions stay filled.
