The National Trust for Canada congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney on his recent election victory and Minister Steven Guilbeault on his re-appointment as Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture, a portfolio that includes responsibility for Canada’s historic places.
Our historic places are more important than ever. Distinctly Canadian in their origin and expression, heritage places contribute to identity and belonging, economic activity, Reconciliation, climate resilience, and community well-being.
In the coming weeks, the National Trust will be reaching out to elected officials to urge the reintroduction of federal legislation for historic places. A previous bill – Bill C-23, Historic Places of Canada Act – died on the Order Paper at Second Reading when Parliament was dissolved in March.
You can help: Reach out to your newly elected Member of Parliament and let them know that you care about the future of our heritage. Our fact sheet, Heritage Builds a Stronger Canada, can help to start the conversation.
