Adirondack Architectural Heritage Welcomes Applications for New Preserving Sacred Heritage Program

June 10, 2025, Keeseville, New York – Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) invites applications for their pilot program, Preserving Sacred Heritage: Expanding Opportunities for Sacred Sites as Community Pillars, which will support completion of a National Register of Historic Places nomination for a historic house of worship.

Not only do religious institutions provide important programs within the community, filling gaps in much-needed services, they also contribute to their vibrancy of place and bring people into downtowns for meetings, programs, and worship services. Churches, synagogues, and other sacred sites in the Adirondacks are often housed in historic buildings with expensive capital repair needs and limited funding. This program aims to connect these important institutions with potential funding opportunities specific to National Register-listed buildings.

The Preserving Sacred Heritage program is funded by a grant from the Adirondack Foundation’s Generous Acts Fund. The program welcomes applications from historic houses of worship in the Adirondack region with active congregations. The recipient will receive a National Register nomination for their property, which will enable them to access additional historic preservation funding through programs such as the New York Landmarks Conservancy's Sacred Sites Program.

Applications are due July 18. Contact Erin Tobin at erin@aarch.org or 518-834-9328 with any questions.
