We’re excited to announce that the Conservancy has received a $420,000 grant from the Getty Foundation to lead a major cultural asset mapping initiative and historic resources survey in Altadena. This community-driven effort comes in response to the devastating Eaton Fire in January 2025, which destroyed half the area’s homes, schools, and places of worship—and claimed at least 18 lives.
Intending to work in close partnership with local organizations and stakeholders, the Conservancy will be documenting both tangible and intangible heritage—from historic buildings and legacy businesses to oral histories, traditions, and cultural practices. This work is essential to ensure Altadena’s cultural identity is not erased in recovery but instead becomes a foundation for rebuilding.
The project will also support community members and local decision-makers in identifying sites eligible for preservation incentives and heritage recognition. With this project, we aim to support the community in honoring what’s been lost, identifying what endures, and shaping a future rooted in heritage and resilience.
Stay tuned for updates as we move forward with this important work in collaboration with the people of Altadena.
