Bill Introduced to Establish Route 66 as a National Historic Trail
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com -
Contributed By: Preservation Action
Website: https://support.savingplaces.org/page/88257/action/1

From Preservation Action:

Last month, Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL) and Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (D-NM) in the House, along with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA), Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO), and Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) in the Senate, reintroduced the Route 66 National Historic Trail Designation Act (H.R. 5470, S. 2887). This bicameral and bipartisan legislation would establish Route 66 as a National Historic Trail, bringing increased interest, investment, and economic revitalization to communities along the iconic road. Similar legislation was introduced in the last Congress, but failed to get across the finish line.

Route 66 stretches 2,400 miles from Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA, across 8 states and more than 300 communities. This important bill would help protect and spur preservation efforts along the historic route which saw decades of decline after most of the route was replaced or bypassed with the construction of the interstate highway system. Route 66 has since experienced a renaissance, becoming one of the biggest heritage tourism attractions in the country. The historic route is set to celebrate it's centennial anniversary in 2026.

Preservation Action joins the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and numerous national, state, and local organizations in urging Congress to pass this important bill. Take action by reaching out to your Representative and Senators and urge them to support the Route 66 National Historic Trail Designation Act (H.R. 5470, S. 2887) today!
