From Preservation Action:
The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee announced this week they would hold a full committee hearing to "examine the Section 106 consultation process under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).” We are still awaiting more details, but the hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 29th at 9:30am and will be broadcast on the committee's website.
Preservation Action will be in attendance and are working closely with our partners to educate Senate offices on the importance of the NHPA and the Section 106 process.
The NHPA established a national framework that allows us to identify and protect historic places and created a partnership between the federal government and state, tribal and local governments to connect local voices to federal decision making. Section 106 review ensures that federal projects consider their impacts on historic and cultural resources before decisions are made, but does not stop projects or mandate an outcome. While no process is perfect, Section 106 continues to be a highly effective collaborative process with a proven track record of efficiency and success.
We need your voice!
We urge you to reach out to your Senators, especially if they serve on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and share how the Section 106 process has worked effectively and efficiently and provide examples of Section 106 success stories from your state. With the Senate hearing only 5 days away, timing is of the essence. Preservation Action has put together talking points and more information about contacting your Senators.
