JOB SUMMARY
The Museum Educator serves as an informed and welcoming ambassador for the site and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, providing student, individual or group tours to interpret the full history of the building and grounds.
This is a seasonal, part-time role at 18 hours per week (Thursday-Saturday) for nine months annually (September-May). The hourly rate is $20 an hour.
DUTIES
Interpret the full history of the site, through interactive dialogic tours that encourage visitors to better understand and appreciate the site within historical and contemporary contexts.
Respectfully and ethically communicate the significance of slavery and its legacy at The Shadows.
Engage visitors in active observation, discussion and synthesis during guided tours.
Communicate respectfully and ethically with visitors and colleagues about slavery and its legacy.
Respond to different groups of visitors (adults, school children, families) by varying tour content and techniques as appropriate.
Craft and execute programming for school-aged children for field trips, tours, and programs.
Assist in monitoring collections security (buildings, objects, grounds) and visitor safety, responding calmly and professionally to emergencies and promptly notifying supervisor of incidents or unsafe conditions.
Provide exceptional customer service to all site guests, assisting as needed with visitor orientation, answering phones, shop retail and ticket sales.
QUALIFICATIONS
A high degree of cultural competency.
Ability to facilitate engaging experiences on challenging and complex histories with diverse audiences in a spirit of dialogue and inquiry.
Experience in public speaking, as an educator, guide, tour leader or related role preferred; experience in a museum or historic or cultural setting a plus.
Desire to contribute in a meaningful way to the discussion of slavery, race, and social justice in America.
Effective and engaging presentation skills, includes both listening and speaking, plus written communication skills. Bi-lingual fluency (in English and French or Spanish) a plus.
Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with culturally diverse audiences, and audiences of varying age. Must have experience working with children. [requires background check]
Ability to work a minimum of 18 hours per week Thursday-Saturday.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Knowledge of and enthusiasm for history, or other cultural topics related to the site preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.
Minimum physical requirements include but are not limited to: Ability to stand for periods up to 75 minutes; walk over uneven terrain; climb stairs; provide multiple guided tours a day; and lift and carry loads of up to 10 pounds on a frequent basis and occasionally more.
Bachelor degree in History, Africana Studies, Education, or Public History required.
