Service Corps Act Includes Funding for Historic Resources on Public Lands
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com - Service Corps Act, Funding, Historic Resources on Public Lands
Contributed By: The National Trust for Historic Preservation's Department of Public Policy

The House passed the “Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2009” (HR 1612) with amendments on March 20th. The bill will “expand the authorization of the secretaries of Agriculture, Commerce and the Interior to provide service opportunities for young Americans to help restore the nation's natural, cultural, historic, archaeological, recreational and scenic resources; train a new generation of public land managers and enthusiasts; and promote the value of public service” on the nation’s public lands.

Amendments to the bill included one by Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT) providing an authorization of $12 million annually for the program and another sponsored by Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) requiring that 75 percent of the Corps’Act program funding be directed to forest restoration projects. The National Trust has been a strong advocate for increased funding for cultural resource protection and maintenance on U.S. Forest Service lands.
