Education Department Accepting Applications for FY '08 Teaching American History Grants
Historic Preservation Blog from PreservationDirectory.com - Teaching American History Grant Program, National Coalition for History, education grant, Department of Education

On October 10, the U.S. Department of Education announced that has begun accepting applications for new fiscal year (FY) 2008 Teaching American History Grants (TAH). The deadline for Notice of Intent to Apply is November 9, 2007. The deadline for transmittal of applications is December 10, 2007.

Although the Bush administration has proposed cutting funding for the program in FY 2008 to $50 million, appropriations bills in both the House and Senate provide funding at $120 million, the same level as recent years.

The Teaching American History Grant program improves the quality of instruction in American history. Grant awards assist elementary and secondary schools in implementing research-based methods for improving the quality of instruction, professional development, and teacher education in American history. Funds are used for competitive grants that are allocated to local education agencies (LEAs) though funding proposals must include a partnership component with an educational non-profit and/or history-based organization.
