Maryland Governor O'Malley Signs HB 510

Yesterday, Governor O'Malley signed into law Maryland HB510 reauthorizing the Sustainable Communities Tax Credit Program. The program, which provides tax credits for rehabilitation of historic buildings, was reauthorized by the Maryland General Assembly last month. In addition to extending the program, the bill included a new provision which allows small businesses to benefit from the credit.  In funding historic preservation,  the tax credit helps bring economic development and revitalization to communities throughout the state.  The program, administered by the Maryland Historical Trust, has a 17 year history of creating jobs, boosting property values, encouraging reinvestment and transforming neglected neighborhoods into vibrant places.

Preservation Maryland was heavily involved in the advocacy efforts of HB510 throughout the session of the General Assembly. We sent a direct appeal to the Governor to support the bill; issued Advocacy Alerts updating the public on the bill's progress and advising them on how to be of assistance; and provided testimonies to the House Ways and Means and the Senate Budget and Taxation Committees in support of HB510.

Thanks to all of you who assisted in our successful efforts to have this bill passed.
