The Historic Preservation Coordinator (HPC) ensures that the Historic District Commission carries out the requirements of the Hammond Historic District Program, as specified in the Commission's strategic plan goals, guidelines, rules of operation, and ordinance. The HPC also promotes general preservation education through public events, lectures, workshops, and presentations

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Assisting the public with questions regarding the process and application for Certificates of Appropriateness (COA)
  • Reviewing applications for COAs and providing Commissioners with a summary of work as it relates to the district's design guidelines
  • Managing the logistics associated with monthly Commission meetings as well as coordinating work sessions (should the HPC deem a work session necessary to properly prepare the Commission for more complex incoming applications)
  • Managing the administrative requirements associated with supporting the Commission in conducting public meetings (e.g. scheduling and advertising meetings, establishing and distributing the monthly agenda)
  • Consistently inspecting the historic district for site violations and reporting them to the Building OfficialLiaising with the Mayor's Office, other pertinent city entities (City Council, Building, Planning and Zoning, Legal), the Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation, and other organizations applicable to carrying out the charge of the Commission
  • Consulting on preservation projects
  • Managing the HHD website and social media accounts to keep the public informed of HHDC activities and furthering the HHD office as a public resource
  • Marketing the public image of the HHDC and educating the public about preservation through events and other types of interactive initiatives
  • Working on special projects as developed, which include, but are not limited to:
    • Producing preservation-related brochures and documents
    • Identifying, researching, and documenting historic properties
    • Preparing preservation-related presentations and workshops
    • Developing new programs to educate and engage the public
    • Researching and consulting on grant-funded projects as well as assisting with administering the requirements of said grant projects (i.e. for surveying and preservation planning initiatives)

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; talk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree and two years professional experience OR a Master's degree. Degree preferences are historic preservation, architectural history, architecture, urban planning or related field.

The HPC must have a demonstrated knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Experience with design review in local historic districts and/or public relations will be weighted heavily.

Public speaking, ability to work well with others, and strong organization skills are essential. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite is required. Knowledge of the Adobe Suite is preferred.
