Job Opening: National Register Historian and Historical Marker Coordinator, SC Department of Archives & History (Columbia, SC)

Job Responsibilities: Co-manages the National Register of Historic Places program. Coordinates, plans, and implements the Historical Marker program in South Carolina.  Provides historical expertise to the division and agency. 
  • Directs and monitors review of National Register nominations from initial draft nominations to their listing, including but not limited to: coordinating review and editing duties for nominations; coordinating Review Board meeting responsibilities among staff; presenting nominations at Review Board meetings; and coordinating submittal of nominations to the National Park Service. 
  • Coordinates the state Historical Marker program, including but not limited to: tracking marker applications; preparing draft texts; conducting historical research; communicating with marker sponsors; finalizing marker text for agency director signature; and maintaining marker lists and databases. 
  • Promotes programs by educating the public, owners, and consultants by answering questions, writing guidance, and providing presentations. 
  • Provides historical expertise to the Historical Services Division and Agency, as appropriate, including review of draft publications and answering requests from the public. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements: A Bachelor's degree in history, historic preservation or related field, and two years professional experience in historical research, writing, teaching, interpretation, or related activity with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of South Carolina and American history. 
  • Knowledge of the National Register of Historic Places program, and ability to apply eligibility criteria to historic properties. 
  • Ability to conduct thorough and professional research. 
  • Ability to review, evaluate, and communicate constructive comments on draft National Register nominations and marker texts. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with the general public, staff and other professionals. 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. Ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner, including public presentations, and all forms of written communication.
Preferred Qualifications: A Master's degree in history, historic preservation or related field, and two years professional experience in historical research, writing, teaching, interpretation or related activity with an academic institution, historic organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution.
