McIntire windows recieve matching opportunity

Danvers Historical Society is pleased to announce it has received a $2,000 matching grant opportunity from the Essex National Heritage Commission. These funds will support the continuing restoration of the National Historic Landmark Derby Summer House by restoring functionality to sash windows, providing ventilation to better preserve the structure.

Over 6,000 visitors from around the world, local residents, researchers, and students of all ages and abilities enjoy this garden folly at Glen Magna Farms. The 1794 Derby Summer House (aka: McIntire Tea house) is the only structure of its kind in the United States.

Matching funds for this project will be raised with private donations. Donors appreciate the significance of this landmark’s representation of American Federal architecture. The delicate columns, festoons above the second story windows and the runs on the roof were all carved by David McIntire in 1794. The dramatic scale and careful details of the Reaper and the Milkmaid sculptures were carved by John and Simon Skillin of Boston.

The Danvers Historical Society provides views into the many stories this Landmark and our other properties illustrate about our local heritage. Visitors, for many years to come, will enjoy views from inside this national treasure overlooking award winning historic gardens, the last of which Danvers has to offer.

“The Society has a deep sense of social responsibility to provide quality educational opportunities to our children, students, young adults, and senior citizens for purposes of cultural enjoyment and enrichment for the entire family”, stated Thomas Page, President of the Danvers Historical Society. “We were extremely gratified to receive ENHC’s support for this national treasure.”

At its core, the Danvers Historical Society is an organization supported by people committed to our mission of educating about the history of Danvers by preserving collections, artifacts, documents, and significant Danvers structures and properties, and by conducting educational programs, lectures and other events. We are a public non-profit organization with a 130 year record of community service. For more information, visit www.DanversHistory.Org and like us on Facebook.
