Job Description

The City of Raleigh, NC is a high growth city, of approximately 460,000 people, that has received a multitude of national  recognitions for its high quality of life. There is no doubt that the City's expansive and high quality Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources programming and amenities contribute to the City's success and sense of place. The prior Director retired after serving the department for 34 years, with 10 years of leadership as the Department Director.  The City is seeking an exceptional leader who has strong technical skills and a vision that can build on the existing legacy of excellence. The PRCR Director is a highly visible member of the city's management team who works closely with the City Council, four citizen boards and commissions, partner community organizations like the Dix Park Conservancy, community groups and residents.

This position will remain open until filled; however, interested applicants are strongly encouraged to apply no late than July 15. Following this date, applications will be screened and the selection process will move forward. 

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $95,631 to $150,000 annually.


Duties and Responsibilities

Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources employees 429 full-time employees and an additional estimated 2000 part-time employees across five divisions with a total operating budget of $52 Million and a capital budget of nearly $14M, annually.  The Department Director is currently assisted by four Assistant Department Directors. The Department manages a diverse array of facilities, amenities and service areas, which include 197 parks, 117 miles of Greenway trails, 30 staffed community centers, 4 unstaffed but programmed community centers, 2 art centers, 2 active-adult centers, 9 historic sites, museums and cemeteries, 60 ball fields, 112 tennis courts, 2 lakes, 4 nature preserves, and 8 swimming pools.  The new Director will have the privilege to develop strategies for the implementation the Dorothea Dix Park Master Plan on 308 acres near downtown Raleigh, but also the responsibility to balance focus and resources with the priorities and opportunities of the rest of the system.

Typical Qualifications

Desirable candidates will have 7-10 years of highly responsible management experience in a large public organization is desired; a Master's degree or equivalent; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Positions in this class typically require:  fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
 
Sedentary Work:  Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
 
Working Conditions: 
Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment.
