Executive Director Position

Historic Red Clay Valley, Inc. d.b.a. Wilmington & Western Railroad

The Executive Director is the professional management leader of the Wilmington & Western Railroad (WWRR), owned and operated by Historic Red Clay Valley, Inc. (HRCV).  The Executive Director provides leadership for the administration and management of Delaware’s only tourist railroad, including its paid staff of 6 employees and generous volunteer work force. The Executive Director is responsible for developing long range plans for the railroad’s success as it continues to grow.  The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors of HRCV, and will be responsible to fulfill the railroad’s mission both in short term and long-term capital projects, fundraising and management goals. The Executive Director will be responsible for:

Fundraising and Development
  • Develop the financial resources to ensure the fiscal health of the railroad.
  • Maintain, strengthen, establish and grow new and existing relationships with individual and corporate donors.
  • Write grants and proposals for capital improvement projects consistent with the Board of Directors strategic planning and company restoration efforts.
  • Acquires grants, donations, and services to achieve the railroad’s goals and objectives.
  • Grow the membership base.

Management
  • With the assistance of the Executive Assistant, develop, present and oversee annual operating budget with quarterly reports to the BOD.
  • Develop and expand management and administrative positions
  • Foster motivating leadership for enthusiastic staff involvement committed to the organizations goals.
  • Hiring, appointment, managing and retention of staff.
  • Oversight of managers and volunteers including volunteer qualification and training programs.
  • Management of the organization’s assets, infrastructure – to include rolling stock, tracks, signals, facilities, other equipment, buildings and grounds.
  • Oversight of restoration projects and capital improvements.

Administration
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with the Board of Directors.
  • Establish and maintain essential involvement of the BOD and staff.
  • Community involvement and outreach.
  • Maintaining and developing long term strategic plans.
  • Identify, cultivate and recruit new members for the Board of Directors.
 
The ideal candidate will have management experience with non-profit or volunteer organizations with a particular emphasis on oversight and management of finances, budgets, fundraising and facilities. In addition, experience with governmental, state and local agencies is preferred. The applicant must be able to work with a multitude of personalities in an effective and efficient manner. Mechanical aptitude is not required, but is a plus. Prior railroad experience is not required but is beneficial.  Familiarity with CFR 49 and FRA regulations helpful.  A sincere passion for our mission is also essential.

Professional Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree with verifiable, proven results in the areas of business, administration, management, organizational leadership and fiscal supervision. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Transparent and high integrity leadership of paid staff and volunteers.
  • Senior (3-5 yrs.) non-profit or volunteer organization management.
  • Solid, hands on, budget management skills.
  • Strong organizational skills including planning, delegating and program development.
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations.
  • Experience with grant writing and donor proposals. (Writing samples expected
  • Demonstrable skills to effectively manage and motivate paid employees and volunteers.

This position is full time. Occasional weekend work expected. Salary is commensurate
with experience and other qualifications. Compensations includes health insurance, matching 401(k) and paid vacation and sick leave.
