VHB Opening: Director of Geophysical Archeaology in Atlanta, GA
Director of Geophysical Archaeology – Atlanta, Ga.

VHB is seeking to employ a full-time mid- to senior level Archaeologist with expertise in geophysical sensing survey methodologies to support our Atlanta based Environmental Services Group. Well-qualified candidates will have experience conducting archaeological investigations (i.e. Phase I, II, and III) and cultural surveys using non-invasive equipment including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and metal detectors. Candidates should have a thorough understanding of the archaeological practices and methods involved with remote sensing geophysical tools and ground truthing techniques to locate buried utilities, delineate and identify unmarked cemeteries, and other features located below ground surface. In addition, well-qualified candidates would have demonstrable knowledge of the Section 106 process and its purpose and application within the overall NEPA process.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead, author, and review, Archaeological Resource Survey and Geophysical Remote Sensing Survey Reports at the Phase I, II, and III levels of archaeological investigation
  • Perform archaeological geophysical surveys using GPR and metal detectors
  • Assess archaeological site significance under Criterion D of the NRHP and assess impacts to archaeological resources
  • Manage scope, schedule, and budget for small to medium sized archaeological projects
  • Prepare field survey and geographic maps using ArcGIS
  • Coordinates regulatory compliance efforts with federal, state, and municipal agencies.
  • Provides artifact analysis and assists curation efforts
  • Conducts archival and historical background research
  • Mentors and leads field and junior level staff archaeologists
  • Support and build client relationships
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units

Requested Skills and Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field
  • Working knowledge of Ground Penetrating Radar systems and equipment and metal detection tools and methodologies
  • 5 to 7 years of experience conducting archaeological survey, preferably within the Southeast (i.e., Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, and/or Tennessee)
  • Familiarity with NEPA, ARPA, NHPA, NAGPRA, and other state environmental compliance laws including GEPA
  • Familiarity working NEPA compliance for USACE, FHWA – i.e. various state DOTs, and FERC.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS, and the ESRI suite of software
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Team oriented with strong capability to work independently
  • Motivated to lead and mentor others
