Fallingwater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, seeks applications for its Preservation Internship. This full-time residency intern will interact with Fallingwater’s preservation and maintenance departments, visiting consultants, and vendors while working in and around a historic house museum environment.
Job Description: Interns will be exposed to a variety of conservation and preservation initiatives at historic buildings on the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s 5,000 acre Bear Run Nature Reserve, in which Fallingwater is located. Interns will focus their duties primarily on documentation and photographic archives with hands-on work such as stone repointing and concrete repair based on past work experience. Past intern projects have included historic building assessments, inventories, project documentation, and miscellaneous preservation repairs. The preservation intern may also sometimes work outdoors in a variety of weather and climate conditions.
Qualifications: Applicants must be a current or entering graduate student in historic preservation, historic building trades, or architectural history with experience in assessing and documenting historic structures. A candidate with hands-on experience in historic masonry or plastering is preferred.
Position Duration: Ten weeks, beginning June 1, 2020, and ending August 7, 2020. Interns will be expected to work during normal business hours (typically Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm), forty hours per week. July 4 is an unpaid holiday.
Location: Fallingwater is located in rural Mill Run, Pennsylvania (zip code 15464), and is approximately ninety minutes by car from the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Having a motor vehicle is strongly recommended, as there are no stores or amenities within walking distance.
Pay: This is an hourly paid internship. Coed, shared housing is provided at no charge. Interns are required to provide their own food, linens, laundry supplies, and incidentals.
